Mine is an '07 1.8tdci tit x and luckily when the malfunction note appears with a ping, the lights settle back fairly centrally, so no issues driving. I do look into the issue occasionally, but nothing definite yet. The only mildly annoying thing is the yellow dot at the front of the car icon on the dash (convers+). Good luck. The radio still works and the LED still shows the stations etc. The clock still works. The overhead map lights still work, and the window lights. Just not the red and blue lights. It could be a poor connection as you suggest the cooling fan does not always work. If the fan does not work the air con won't. A cheap check/investigation is to check out a very popular fault on the Mondeo which is corrosion/break of the "purple" wire that runs from fan along chassis leg to EMC unit. There is loads of info about this wire Today randomly had the rev counter and speedo not work at all during a drive. Everything else was fine on the dash, engine ran fine. Was fine after a power cycle. Hooked it up to a scanner no extra DTCs or codes. Then later that evening battery low message came on. Checked voltage was low. battery only at 25%. Makes sense as have been doing
